Dextromethorphan

There are several products that will help suppress a cough. Alcohol is a remedy that is time tested. Codeine and other forms of narcotics will suppress a cough. Honey and eucalyptus may help. The only cough suppressant sold over the counter is dextromethorphan. Below are listed the common forms:

The dose of dextromethorphan is:

12 years and over 15 mg every four hours or 30 mg every six to eight hours
6-12 years 7mg every four hours or 15 mg every six to eight hours
2-6 years 3.5 mg every four hours or 7.5 every six to eight hours
< 2 years 0.8 to 3.2 mg every four hours or 1.6 to 4 mg every eight hours

There are a number of combination products that have DM in their naming: Dimetapp DM, Triaminic DM, Robitussin DM, etc. Whenever you find DM in the product name you have dextromethorphan.
