Baked Stuffed Apples

A wonderful old-fashioned dessert (or breakfast treat) that deserves revival. Use raisins or dates, as you prefer, for the stuffing.

6 large baking apples
1/3 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
1/2 cup raisins (or chopped dates)
1 cup water

3/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Core apples, then peel halfway down from the top. Place in a baking dish; fill centers with mixture of nuts and raisins or dates. In a small saucepan combine water, sugar, and spices. Bring to boil while stirring, then simmer 8 to 10 minutes. Pour over apples, then bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes until apples are soft. Baste apples with the syrup 3 or 4 times during baking. Makes 6 serviings.
